The Portland Waldorf School curriculum works to develop the imagination of children, through telling stories and seeing imaginative drawings.  The children take these into their sleep life, where these images mature and progress, so that they can be further developed by the teacher the next morning.  Television, computers and even taped music can prevent this from happening.  They place a lifeless physical image into the mind of the child and prevent the imagination from remaining full of life.  If this occurs, the task of the teacher becomes therapeutic and remedial, rather than that of cultivating the child's development.

Therefore, we strongly discourage exposure to electronic media, particularly television, video and computer games.  While it is ultimately the parents' responsibility to determine the amount of contact the child has with electronic devices, we ask that you make every effort to support this policy as a way of supporting the teachers as well as other parents.  We encourage you to be as informed as possible.  There are books for further reading on the subject available in the school store and library.
