High School Athletics

Our sports program provides students the opportunity for discipline, to encourage and strengthen students’ health and fitness, and to experience the importance of leadership and being a part of a team. Competition helps to mark individual and team progress, as well as to expose students and our entire school community to other high school students and families within our larger Portland community.

Sports Team Policy

  • Inclusive teams, self chosen
  • “No cut” policy, so students are welcome to participate regardless of ability or skill.
  • Student athletes must keep their commitment to attend practices and competitions on a regular basis.
  • Students who desire to play a sport that is not offered at PWS are eligible to play for the public school district in which they reside.
  • Student athletes must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher from the previous semester and keep all major assignments current in order to participate in an extra-curricular activity.

Coach qualifications

We are committed to having strong leaders as our coaches for each sports program. Some coaches are teachers or parents within our school community, and others are professionals in the city of Portland. We require that all coaches have standard First Aid and CPR training and have completed the American Sport Education Program certification for coaches or the equivalent required by the OSAA.

"Since I came to Waldorf, I have done things I never thought I could do. I had the opportunity to be an athlete: I was on the golf, tennis and track teams. I have been in two plays, did my first paintings, started the chess team, made samurai swords for my senior project and rediscovered a love for learning.”
Alex Blair, PWS Class of 2004
