PWS: A Classical and Contemporary Education
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your interest in Portland Waldorf School! PWS is one of over 180 Waldorf schools in North America and over 1000 worldwide—which makes Waldorf the largest private-school movement currently in the world.
The primary goal of Waldorf education is to instill in children a life-long love of learning and to help children meet their highest potential. Ninety-five percent of students who graduate from Waldorf high schools in the United States go on to earn at least a bachelor’s degree.
Established in 1982, Portland Waldorf School is fully accredited with the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (ASWNA) and the National Council of Private School Accreditation. We currently have more than 360 students (pre-kindergarten through high school) and 65 faculty/staff. Our curriculum includes science, math, and the liberal arts in addition to a strong music program, German and Spanish (both beginning in Grade 1), drama, movement, fine and fiber arts, woodworking, dance, and other subjects to provide a well-rounded education.
People are drawn to our school because of our attention to each child’s spirit and imagination as well as his/her intellect, the community atmosphere, and the integration of the arts throughout the curriculum among many other reasons.
This is an exciting time in the life of our school. The high school we established in 1999 is flourishing, and in 2002 we purchased and moved to a permanent site in historic downtown Milwaukie, easily accessible off 99E, just 15 minutes from downtown. Just blocks from the Willamette River, this beautiful seven-acre site allows us to offer early childhood through high school on one site. The campus has several natural springs, fields for games and sports, full gym facilities, a science lab, library, music rooms, and other facilities which support the curriculum. Our location is across the street from the Milwaukie public library and near the Milwaukie Museum.
Please come to one of our special events, or call the school. We'd be happy to show you around.
